Childhood Obesity Tips from Body of Health in Guelph

July is childhood obesity awareness month. According to the Childhood Obesity Foundation, “In 1978, only 15% of children were overweight or obese……by 2007 29% of youth had unhealthy weights and these percentages have continued to rise steadily.” To maintain healthy weight it is recommended that children eat 5 or more servings of fresh fruits and veggies daily, spend 2 hours or less in screen time per day and be physically active for 1 or more hours each and every day. It is also recommended that children do not consume any sugary drinks in the hot weather. If a food or drink has ingredients that you can’t pronounce do not buy it.

Summertime is the best time to set the wheel of change in motion. There are many fun outdoor activity programs for kids to become involved in and the fresh local fruits and vegetables are ripe for the picking, literally, it’s fun!
